How to make the move to organic skincare

How to make the move to organic skincare

Posted by Luke Ryan on

Often, the commercial beauty products you find on your supermarket shelves – and even in many gift shops – are packed with preservatives, diluted with water, and laden with ingredients most of us would struggle to pronounce.

If you’re looking to change your beauty routine and move to organic skincare here are our top tips for making the transition as easy and smooth as possible.

Plan – what do you actually need?

Most of us don’t realise how many beauty products and accessories we actually own – nor how far from organic or natural many of them are.

Start by writing a list of all the products you own – and which you actually use. Include all the products you use in the shower and bath, as well as your skincare products, and the contents of your make-up bag and bathroom cupboard (don’t forget non-organic sanitary items can carry chemicals too!).

Determine how many products you actually use on a regular basis, and which ones you wouldn’t miss at all. You may not, for instance, need 20 different shades of eyeshadow, three types of shower gel, or six different varieties of body cream. In fact, when you give it some thought, you may be surprised how few natural beauty products you actually need.

Prioritise – what matters most?

Once you’ve worked out what products you’d like to replace, start to prioritise. You may not be prepared to simply throw away your entire collection of non-organic beauty products and start from scratch.

Be mindful that many natural beauty products are designed to work together, so it’s worth switching to a similar group of products at the same time: a natural shampoo and conditioner, for instance. A facial cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Or Willow by the Sea’s Belly Oil and Belly Butter.

Research – which products are right for you?

When choosing new products, do plenty of research, read reviews, and seek advice. Be sure to choose certified organic products – the ingredients of which are grown and harvested without any strange or toxic chemicals.

While many beauty products claim to be derived from ‘natural’ ingredients, there’s no telling where these ingredients have been produced, or which chemicals were involved in growing or harvesting these products for use.

Assess – is it working for you?

Sometimes it can take a while for your body to benefit from a new product, so give it time. Don’t expect instant results.

Sometimes, your skin may feel different after using a natural, organic product. You may even experience breakouts, as your body releases toxins.

Unless you’re experiencing any irritation or discomfort, it’s important to persist so your body and skin become used to new products. You can then work out if you like a new product, switch it, or ditch it.

If one of our products doesn’t work for you, please let us know so we can help you find a better match.
